Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)
Endodontics is the field of dentistry that deals with diseases of the pulp tissue and root canals inside the tooth. Root canal treatment aims to preserve the tooth in the mouth by cleaning out infected or damaged pulp tissue.
When evaluating root canal treatment in Ankara, the current condition of the tooth, the cause of the pain, the root canals and the surrounding tissues are examined together. The aim, in suitable cases, is to allow the natural tooth to continue functioning without extraction.
- Evaluating the cause of pain and sensitivity
- Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals
- Preserving the natural tooth in the mouth whenever possible
At the centre of the tooth is a structure called the pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerve tissue. Deep decay, trauma, cracks or problems related to previous restorations can cause this tissue to become inflamed or infected. In such cases, spontaneous pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, night pain or discomfort while chewing may occur.
The aim of root canal treatment is to remove infected or irreversibly damaged pulp tissue from the root canals, clean the canal system and fill it with suitable materials. This way, the source of infection is eliminated and the tooth is preserved in the mouth.
Before treatment, a clinical examination is carried out and, when necessary, radiographic images are used. The treatment plan is created after evaluating the root structure of the tooth, the surrounding bone tissue and the extent of the infection.
When May Root Canal Treatment Be Necessary?
- In cases of deep decay that has reached the tooth nerve
- In cases of prolonged or spontaneous severe toothache
- In cases of long-lasting sensitivity to hot and cold
- When the pulp tissue is affected by trauma or a fracture of the tooth
- In cases where an infection or abscess develops around the tooth root
- When a previously performed root canal treatment needs to be re-evaluated
How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed?
During treatment, the infected or damaged pulp tissue inside the tooth is first accessed. The root canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected with special instruments. The canal spaces are then sealed with suitable filling materials.
Once the root canal treatment is completed, the loss in the upper structure of the tooth is also evaluated. An appropriate restorative treatment is planned according to how much healthy tooth structure remains. This is because an adequate and well-fitting final restoration is also important for the long-term success of a root canal-treated tooth.
Whether root canal treatment is needed is not determined by the severity of the pain alone. The condition of the pulp and the area around the root should be examined together through clinical examination and radiographic evaluation.
What Should Be Considered After Root Canal Treatment?
Mild sensitivity may occur in the tooth during the first few days after treatment. This may be seen especially in teeth that had an infection before treatment. It is important to follow the dentist’s recommendations and to avoid chewing hard foods with a tooth whose treatment has not been completed.
In root canal treatment in Ankara and endodontic evaluations, the aim is not only to relieve the existing pain, but also to bring the source of infection under control, preserve the function of the tooth and, whenever possible, keep the natural tooth in the mouth.
